Man Ray, “l’homme à tête de lanterne magique”, n’aurait probablement aimé ni l’exposition du Centre Georges Pompidou, intitulée “Man Ray. La photographie à l’envers”, ni le livre qui l’accompagne.
Les deux commissaires, Emmanuelle de L’Écotais et Alain Sayag redistribuent les cartes comme tenta de le faire Aragon dans J’abats mon jeu, tirent un à un les fils qu’avait patiemment tissés l’auteur de “l’âge de la lumière” et de La photographie n’est pas l’art. Ils déconstruisent non pas un mythe, mais les rapports complexes qu’entretenait Man Ray avec la photographie et plus encore avec le statut de photographe.
Dans son introduction, Alain Sayag rappelle que le Centre Georges Pompidou avait déjà consacré deux expositions à Man Ray. La dation de 12000 négatifs, complétée par un don de 1500 clichés appartenant à Lucien Treillard, légitime une nouvelle approche de l’oeuvre, une confrontation décapante entre les propos de Man Ray et ce que le fonds révèle.
On pourrait épiloguer sur l’intitulé des trois parties qui articulent le propos : “Dupliquer le réel”, “Démarquer le réel”, “Dénaturer le réel”, mais ce serait s’égarer dans des considérations subalternes au regard de l’intérêt de la thèse développée et mieux explicitée dans les sous-titres : “le métier de photographe”, “l’invention photographique”. Oui, Man Ray est un véritable créateur, novateur le plus souvent, jamais encombré par la technique. Mais le dilettante travailla beaucoup et usa de toutes les ficelles du métier avec autant d’aplomb qu’il les détourna. Derrière la puissance jubilatoire (“Man Ray, n. masc, synon. de joie, jouer, jouir”), derrière la posture d’artiste, l’homme a plus d’une rouerie dans sa lanterne : c’est ce que soulignent avec efficacité les auteurs.
Avec “Comment je suis devenu Man Ray. Le photographe à la tâche”, Michel Frizot met en lumière quelques vérités premières qu’ont occultées aussi bien Man Ray que la critique. Il rappelle “la rustique cuisine de l’hypo et des lentilles” à laquelle est soumis le photographe naissant, l’émergence “comme en sous-main d’une fonction d’artiste encore introuvable, novice et bricoleur dans l’ombre d’un statut convoité, en attendant”. Là est le noeud du problème. Photographe tâcheron rivé à son studio, à ses commandes, cela n’est possible ni pour Man Ray ni pour sa clientèle. Dans le contexte de ses relations avec les surréalistes, face à une photographie pictorialiste à bout de souffle, “Man Ray n’avait le choix que d’inventer un style”.
Autre évidence trop oubliée, trop masquée par le dispositif des expositions, les exigences du marché de l’art, rappelée par Michel Frizot et développée par Emmanuelle de L’Écotais : le “photographier pour”, lié à la notion de commande. Man Ray photographe n’a travaillé ni pour les galeries ni pour les musées (du moins jusqu’à la guerre) mais pour un marché où les usages de la photographie sont décloisonnés, l’illustration apte à des recyclages multiples et variés, où les va-et-vient entre expérimentation et utilisation mercantile sont autant de tremplins pour transgresser les règles.
